The vineyard shed

Little buildings like this one are common sights around the local vineyards. Le cabanon du vigneron (the grape grower's shed). They once served as storage sheds for tools and places to take a little bit of lunch in the days before motorized vehicles made it easy to shuttle between home and the vines. Nowadays, they mostly sit empty or crumbling from neglect.

The grower's shed sits next to the dirt road through the vineyard behind our house.

This one is not far from our house, in fact we can see it from the guest room window. It's locked up tight and there's a small pile of debris blocking the door. Vines are planted against the walls on three sides, and every year the workers prune them back.

You are seeing this post because it was written on Thursday morning, prior to the big storm. We may lose power during the night because of high winds. That will mean no internet and no central heating. We have the wood stove; I'm going out this morning to split a few logs just to be prepared for the morning. And three of the burners on our kitchen stove (cooker) are gas burners, so we can boil water and heat food.

I'm hopeful that we won't lose power, and if we do, that it's not for a week like last year.

  1. Hope your power is surviving - we have been having fairly constant brownouts, and lost the internet for over 2 hours.

Apart from that - ain't winter grand!

  5. I checked you blog about the same time as Nadège and I cannot see any update in Newsiness. So you must have lost power. Or, maybe, just like Simon you just lost the internet. Hope it won't last too long. I'll be checking.

  7. I've only just reconnected the Livebox... the power has been wildly up and down this morning as Simon commented. Hope you're both OK.

If they prune those old vines every year, are they table grapes, or just a bonus in the wine?

  8. At least if you've lost power, I feel assured with both of your varied interests, you will not be at a loss of what to do with your time.

  10. Just a call from Ken at 6:30 PM, St-Aignan's time. He and Walt are both OK. No damage of any kind to the house or the yard. But their power is out and, of course, no internet. Power was supposed to be restored in the evening, but nothing yet. I'll be keeping you posted if I hear anything.

  13. Looks like our luck is holding. No power outages last night and just the odd flicker of the lights this morning and the internet didn't go down. Having said that we have acquired a couple of swimming pools....the ground is SO waterlogged from all that rain dumped last night that we are awash.

  14. I hope you dodged this storm Walt. I know how it is to await one of those monsters. No fun being without electric, heat or, God forbid, THE INTERNET. I hope you're reading this comment happy and dry.

  15. I ran Walt and Ken this am - no power, but they have heat and cooking facilities. If they don't have power by lunchtime we will take our generator up there

  16. Thanks, everyone! And a special thank you to CHM for posting the comment after talking to us.

Power has been restored (after 30 hours) and we are getting things back up and running. We're no worse for wear.

    More details to come.

  17. 30 hours is a long time to be without power. It is always nice of CHM to let us know what is going on after he talked to you.
