A burning barrel

This barrel belongs to one of the growers who owns parcels out behind our house. As he prunes the vines, he burns the cut sarments (vine shoots) in this home-made burner. He is already finished with his parcels that are closest to us, so we won't likely be seeing him out there again until spring.

The burn barrel on a frosty morning. Another grower works on his vines across the road.

The grower with the largest parcels out back hasn't started yet. His crew must be working on other parcels. It won't be long, however, until we see them out there every day for a month or two. They don't burn the sarments, but line them up between the rows. Later, they will pull a broyeur (grinder) behind a tractor to mulch the trimmings in place.

I know that I talk about this every year. My blog is getting repetitive. But that's life, isn't it?

  1. I find your posts very interesting, even though I don't comment every day.(*)
You may think the stories you post are repetitive, but I learn so very much from them. Don't stop.
As for the vigneron getting a head start on his pruning, good for him. I also say, Make hay while the sun shines!
(*) The word verification can be a pain sometimes. I may have to refresh several times before I find one I can actually read.

  2. If the trimmers burn as they go, they may be able to stay warm on a cold winter's day. I thrive on the repetition of the vineyard. Just think how long vines have been tended. Also think about how pleased folks must have been when they discovered wine for the first time.

  5. Cet incinérateur ambulant est absolument génial. Il y en a un similaire dans mon village. Il sert a bruler les branches de cassis après la taille. Je n'ai pas encore eu l'occasion de la photographier.

  6. Aren't everyone's lives a bit repetitive? It's up to us each day to look at things a little differently, or to notice new things about the same old, same old! You do that for me, Walt!
    Thank you.

  7. I like life is repetitive in some ways - if its not then that means it ended!!!! How morbid.
Let's all continue on a repetitive life for many years to come.

mary, in winter I tend to stay inside, not go far, and it's so dark that the taking new photos is not as easy. Oh well!

  9. That's a beautiful picture of a wonderfully clever re-use of ordinary materials. I can feel the frost through my shoes.
