Slugs in the trees

Who knew that slugs liked asparagus? And that they climbed? I saw a couple of these big orange slugs up in an asparagus plant out in the vineyard the other day. That's right, two in the same plant. They were munching away, if slugs can actually munch. You can see that this one had severed a stem and is in the process of consuming it.

This is what asparagus looks like if you let the stalks go into flower. Except for the slug.

I also noticed that there were at least three more slugs on the ground moving (slowly) in the direction of this patch of asparagus plants. I had to watch where I stepped.

  2. Very nice picture indeed. When I see your photos of insects and other tiny creatures I always wonder how you manage to make such detailed, close-up shots. Do you simply kneel down or do you lie down on your stomach (in the wet grass, surrounded by the slowly advancing slugs?).

    1. martine, I have been known to crawl around, but mostly I just crouch down for close ups.

  4. Very nice portrait of this guy. Great detail and highlights. You had much better lighting conditions than I did as I was in the deep shade of the Amboise forest. I'll try to take studio lighting next time. But these are really interesting creatures... unless they're eating your lunch.

  5. Ugh! But you make a slug look like a work of art. And I love your caption. "... Except for the slug."

  6. Eww. Yuck. Stepping on a slug with bare feet gives you a nasty, gooey, gloopy dead mess on your feet. Glad you had shoes on, and didn't step on one :)

    1. elgee, for this shot I used a Canon EFS 18-55 zoom. The lens was zoomed all the way to 55mm, f6.3, shutter at 1/100, and ISO 400.

  8. Thanks for the info, Walt! Is that the standard zoom for a Canon DSLR? Good quality lens by the look of your pictures! Although I think you have a 200mm 2.8 as well, don't you?
