You say tom-ah-to

The tomatoes in the vegetable garden and coming along nicely. I'm looking forward to their ripening. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather continues to cooperate and that the mildiou (fungus) stays away.

I don't know what kind these are, but they're looking good so far.

I planted five or six different tomato varieties from seed, and have another mix of varieties that were given to me by a friend. I neglected to properly label the gift plants when I put them in the garden and now I have no idea which ones are which. I do have a list, so I might be able to figure it out when they ripen.

  1. Totally off topic, but my sister, her partner and their child are staying in a place called Loire. I think it is a fair distance from you, so I won't suggest she drop in for coffee. Do I have a vague recollection about a place called Troo and caves where people used to live?

    1. Trôo is about 2 hours north of us. I've never heard of a town named Loire. Could it be Montoire? That's close to Trôo. Or Lavardin? I was up there at the end of May and it's a beautiful area.

  2. Those tomatoes look really good. Are they the small 'cerise' type or will they grow into the real, full-size thing? It's hard to tell from your (as always excellent) photo.

  4. Whatever they are, they're looking good. We have already harvested some 'maters (I am from the South after all) from the garden that we're minding while our neighbor is traveling. They're small but quite good. I hope yours will be as well.

  6. andrew, yes, le Loir is a tributary of la Loire to the north (whereas I'm on the Cher, another tributary to the south). Troo is a small town downriver (toward the west). The valley is part of the Touraine winemaking region and, yes, there are troglodyte dwellings all around.

martine, I think they may be somewhere in between.

simpson (elliot?), I can't wait for them to ripen.

stuart, lucky you. Your neighbor must have gotten a jump on the season. I'm always late.

    gosia, yum!
