I don't think we have that meaning in U.S. English. Don't you describe something that is dirty as being "soiled"? We don't buy "compost" in bags, but either manure or potting soil (dirt). Soil in French is either terre or terreau (soil-based compost). And by the way, we Americans pronounce compost with a long O in the second syllable, rhyming with "post."Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17913552.post-11210453659966192202017-03-21T10:58:47.134+01:002017-03-21T10:58:47.134+01:00I have been fascinated by your use of the words di...I have been fascinated by your use of the words dirt and soil. In the UK and Ireland 'soil' would usually be referred to as 'top soil' and used for laying a lawn, or starting a new garden off. For plants we would buy bags of compost.....or even by careful recycling make our own compost from rotting vegetation etc.. Dirt would be dusty muddy stuff which would be useless for growing anything in.
What do they say about English being a common language divided.....?
Blathnaidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05552164683689619087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17913552.post-65598843359177010672017-03-21T04:04:26.392+01:002017-03-21T04:04:26.392+01:00Love the wooden path.
