Fall In Alabama

Among our activities yesterday was a walk up on Cheaha Mountain where the fall colors are pretty much near their peak. We saw peak colors in upstate New York three weeks ago, and now we are getting to see them again in the south!

We also visited Anniston's natural history museum. The exhibits were lots of fun, but we also got to see some of the local wildlife outside.

Last evening we stopped on our way to dinner at a certain street in Anniston where, as tradition has it, many people go with their children to trick-or-treat for halloween. It was amazing - the street was blocked off and parents and kids walked up and down stopping at all the houses that were decorated for the evening. There were lines of ten to twenty kids at some of the houses. The homeowners in some places had set up chairs in their driveways at sat dispensing candy to the hoards of masked children. Some of the displays were quite elaborate, some less so, but almost every household on this block participated in what has become, over the years, an October 31st tradition. It was quite a spectacle.

Today, after breakfast, we leave Alabama and head to Kentucky for an overnight stay before arriving in Illinois for the last stop on our trip.
