This statue is in the lobby of an office building in the Chicago Loop. I don't remember which one. I don't know what the statue is called or who sculpted it. But when I saw that someone put a Michael Jordan jersey on the statue, I just couldn't resist a photo.
The building was closed as it was Sunday. I took the picture through the glass windows of the lobby. I really like how the red of the jersey just makes the picture dynamic. Don't ask me to explain what I mean by that.
I think I have one more photo from Chicago that I want to share after this. Then I'll stop and we'll return to winter in France. You have been warned.
This is the fifteenth in a brief series of photos that I took while visiting Chicago in June 1996. They're 35mm color slides that I've scanned and digitized.
It looks funny at first but I don't really like that way of advertising. It's more like insulting the author of the art work.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how they did that MJ thing unless they had to sew it on.
ReplyDeleteAs an art student I remember when we did a charcoal of a bust of Ulysess, we chucked a dustcoat over his shoulders, put a cap on his head and a cigarette out of his mouth just before out teacher returned to the classroom.
We were teenagers afterall.
It's all fun.
Looks like a superhero comic character! I like the colors of the photo.
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying all your photos from Chicago.
ReplyDeleteI like them all.
Did you participate to the "randonnee pedestre"?
Walt, I read your blog before Ken's.
ReplyDeleteI know the answer to my question about the "promenade champetre".
Hopefully winter in your hamlet is better than mine.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the sculpture of the fruit, maybe an apple, at La Defense in Paris. There is a stem with a couple of leaves at the top and the whole thing is maybe 10 feet tall. When I took a photo of it, there was a pair of ladies panties hanging from the leaf! :)

1996 was the second of three years the Chicago Bulls Basketball team won the national championship. For the past 20 years or so, when one of Chicago's sports teams is winning, the City will put sports clothing on some of the public art as a means of support for the team. -Although it might appear to be advertising, it is mean to be a (very) temporary display of team support and pride.
ReplyDeleteWait! Chicago's not in France. I really need to get out more.
ReplyDeletem.
silly old bulls !
ReplyDeleteI would love to know how they got that jersey on the statue., because from this picture, it doesn't look like there's any way to do it without cutting the jersey and sewing it back together.
ReplyDeletevtt, not so much advertising as boosterism, I think.
ReplyDeleteleon, if that's the worse you did... but it probably isn't! hehehe
evelyn, the color comes from my taking the picture through the green-tinted glass of the lobby. I like the effect.
nadege, you got it!
rick, I suspect our winter is tad milder than yours!
bettyann, I see that kind of thing often. Human nature!
chicagoanno, I didn't mean to imply that it was advertising. My bad. Team and city spirit!
mark, lol!
michael, hehehehehe.
starman, I'm sure they did something like that. Besides, it's probably not an actual jersey; too big.
