Grocery shopping

I'm planning a trip to the grocery store this morning. To do some grocery shopping. Some might call it food shopping. Others might call it going to the supermarket or, more simply, going to the market. The name of the establishment might figure in what you call it. As in going to Price Chopper or Kroger, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Many are open 24 hours a day. What you're getting there is implied: food.

Depending on where you live and what you like, you might also be going for alcohol. I think that most food chains in the US sell beer and wine. Food stores here in France also sell liquor. In New York state, where I grew up, there is still no wine to be had in grocery stores (supermarkets). There are state-licensed establishments for that. Since 2023, liquor and wine stores in New York can be open between the hours of 10am and 10pm on Sunday (or between 9am and midnight the rest of the week). When I was a kid, beer could not be sold before noon.

Where do you go for food? Wine and spirits?

  1. I remember moving to LA in 1982 and being surprised to find all kinds of booze in the supermarkets. I also remember being annoyed to learn in Brockport NY in 1972 that you couldn’t buy beer before noon Sundays. I did not go to church and felt it was an infringement on my rights. (I was thirsty.)

  2. For food shopping we go to Harris Teeter - a subsidiary of Kroger, and or, Whole Foods. In addition we go to Trader Joes for wine, cheese and a few other things that they simply have the best selection and price, and I go to Aldi a couple of times a month for wine to cook with, Irish butter, some cheeses, whole chickens. Spirits - Virginia is a state store system there is on the the corner of US-1 and Huntington, the one at Belle Haven has a better selection of bourbon.

  3. My Piggley Wiggley is one block away when I go out my back gate. Unfortunately it is closed for remodeling and won't be open for seven months if all goes well. I miss it so much! They have a huge selection of wine. Hard liquor is sold in state stores in Alabama. I shop in a neighborhood Walmart, Publix (expensive) and Aldi's mostly.
Lewis was surprised to see so many liquor stores in Louisville when he visited for the first time.("One on every corner")I remember see those small bottles of liquor in our drug stores. I don't know if this is still happening.

  4. I go, "to the store", now that I think about it :) If I want to be specific, I say grocery store. I never say supermarket, nor did my family, growing up :) Our stores are Schnucks (that hit the ear oddly, when we first moved here...family name of the family that started the chain), Dierbergs (family, again), and we have Aldi and Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
In Missouri, we have all the alcohol of every kind, in the grocery stores, and at Target and at Walmart and Trader Joe's... no special stores needed, or in existence, any more. They used to close off those aisles on Sundays. Now, you can buy on Sunday, but probably not until noon. I guess.
In New Jersey, they only sell alcohol at a "Package Store", but they aren't state-run. I believe that Pennsylvania does the state store thing, too... I remember that they had a drive-through state store where we bought lots of beer for a family wedding reception.

  5. We "go to the store" or "go to TJs" (Trader Joes, walking distance at the end of our block). Everything else comes from Bianchini's or Lunardi's, our local grocery stores. Being from California, I was surprised to learn that other states restricted sales of alcohol. Maybe CA restricts sales between 2-6am? Not sure. -- Chrissoup

  6. Oregon still has liquor stores managed by the State. Otherwise, wine, beer, cider and "Mike's" are for sale at Fred Meyers (Kroger owned), Winco, Albertson's and Safeway and my preference is in that order as well! I find I am buying real products and not packaged boxes to prepare, so Trader Joe's has never really attracted me. I do buy a great loaf of Cranberry - walnut bread at Costco and once in a while their rotisserie chicken. Specialtry cheeses at Christmas, too. I usually tell my friends: just returned from "Freddies" or I had to use that ice cream coupon before it expired at Albertsons. I rarely say "store".
