Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher is a sleepy town. It's lost a lot of its commerce over the years since we moved nearby. After covid, the town moved it's weekly market out of the center and into a larger place. But some vendors never came back. We're left with banks, insurance companies, and real estate agencies. It's kind of sad, but that's the reality in so many rural places.
A street leading up to the center of town from the river.
The house feels cold while outdoor temperatures creep up. Come on, spring!

Another charming view. It’s a shame about these beautiful and historic rural communities.
ReplyDeleteExactly so!
DeleteOne thing we like about old town Alexandria, is there is still a thriving retail district, with a fair number of independent merchants. I wish we lived closer to King Street, we just need an extra million to offset the difference in house prices.
ReplyDeleteThat is sad.

Oh! So, the market is no longer where it was when Betsy, Doug, and I visited in 2017? I'll tell you, that still feels like such a recent visit, in my mind, that I hadn't even thought that COVID hadn't even started yet. Wow.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad to think about rural centres dying. Hopefully, the North American trend of families to moving to smaller towns and cities gives us hope. Perhaps the mayor needs to do more to attract families and generate business. St. Aignan is a wonderful place to raise a family or to retire. It needs a vlogger to start doing videos or write a book about it to attract YouTube viewers and readers to the place. Look what Frances Mayes did for Cortona.
