Poisson confiture

Just kidding Confiture is jam or preserves; gelée is jelly. This is une méduse (jellyfish) that I saw on the beach at the Ile d'Oléron during our visit in 2008. I assume it was dead. I don't remember Callie being interested in it at all.

A jellyfish on the beach. Ile d'Oléron, May 2008.

I'm seriously tired of this cold weather. I know it's February and this is kind of normal. But it doesn't feel normal. Our lows hover around zero (freezing) most mornings and struggle to rise through the day. We've had no snow (except once back in December (I think), but otherwise it's been rain and fog. I'll be happy to see it go.

  1. This is the time of year I remember winter getting a bit monotonous when we lived in the northeastern US. We’re already looking forward to spring even here. Jellyfish are so unpleasant and so beautiful. I wonder if that’s a compass jellyfish. If so, good thing Callie wasn’t interested. They have a painful sting, even when they’re dead.

  3. Oh, my, I don't remember seeing jellyfish with those black streaks, so Mitchell's comment made me look up Compass jellyfish, and they do have those streaks. I don't like jellyfish.

  4. Beautiful photo! I’ve been stung by jellyfish while snorkeling in the Florida Keys, no fun at all.
Sending good vibes for better weather for you.

  5. Sorry about your late Winter and cold weather. We have had many of those 20 plus mornings in the past few weeks but in the afternoons it has been in the mid - 40's. We have lots of jellyfish on the coast - I don't go in the water - WAY TOO COLD. When I was a kid - I would wade in on a walk along the shoreline and a few times up to my hips! In the Newport OR Sea-life Museum there is a tunnel of glass you can walk through that has many jellyfish which are really gorgeous and graceful in their movements! Keep away from them, just like Michael warned, I, too, have heard about those stings not being pleasant at all.

  7. When I lived in Michigan February was the worst month tired of cold/gray and slush snow.
