Clean Refrigerator

I followed through with my threat and emptied le frigo (the fridge) on Tuesday to give it a good clean. I won't tell you how long it's been since it's been done.

All clean!

Nor will I show you any "before" photos. Let's just say it wasn't pretty. It took a good two hours, taking each shelf and rack out, washing, rinsing, and drying them separately before putting it all back together. I used two sponges, a couple cleaning rags, kitchen towels, and a toothbrush.

The cooling tower.

This was a job that required unplugging the beast, of course. At the end, I felt bad about putting the food back in. The interior looked so bright and shiny, uncluttered, almost gleaming. But in it all went. I didn't attempt the freezer compartment. That will wait for another day. Or year.

  1. Oooh, shiny fridge!

I can't remember how I found your blog (probably googling for pictures of my old domicile en France), but I've followed for a few months now. Nice head banner!

  3. Will I recognize the house when I get back? If you can get a work permit, you might find a new career opportunity in all this. Make sure you get paid in euros.

  8. This reminds me of Kate Gosselin :) Of course, you don't know who she is, though, Walt! There is a show on here called John and Kate Plus Eight, about a couple, John and Kate, who had a pair of twins, and then, on their next try, ended up pregnant with sextuplets. The little ones are about 4 now, and the big sisters are about 7, and the show follows them around in their real life. The little ones are JUST ADORABLE, so it's fun to watch. Kate, the mom, is an admitted clean FREAK, and a few episodes ago, they had just moved into a beautiful new (to them) house, and for the whole episode, she was cleaning the probably-already-clean empty fridge, complaining and moaning about how DISGUSTINGLY filthy it was. She was using a toothbrush, too :))

  10. Very, very impressive. Also inspiring, although probably not inspiring enough to make me do the same.

  12. Wow! You could sell that fridge and advertise it as new!! No one would know. I wouldn't tell...

I'm trying to gather inspiration from you here because we are going to have to move back to the states in March (sniff, sniff) and I am going to have to clean the fridge out. Any plans to visit Lille? Feel the urge to clean another fridge? :-) I have beer, wine and a husband who is a great cook. I can make you my specialty; ice cubes.

  16. First, let me say that I never imagined posting about cleaning my refrigerator would generate so many comments.

Second, those of you who asked me to come and clean yours must provide air fare and room & board, as Cheryl suggested, and I'm on my way.

And finally, yes, a toothbrush is a wonderful cleaning tool for those nooks and crannies where crud likes to take up residence. And although crud is the enemy, it gets away with so much...

  18. Your post got such a warm response because, let's face it, how often does the average person see a clean fridge?

Can I go to the head of the line if I bring our fridge to you?
