Of course, there are many ways to mash potatoes and other vegetables. We use our food mill sometimes (see Kitchen Collection #12), and a ricer that works pretty well, too.

Quite a puzzling and interesting photo! ;) It took me a while to realise that your potato masher was standing in a pot.

Actually the potato masher pictured came first. Some time in the 30's. The one with holes in it became popular in the late 50's or early 60's, about the same time that they came out with the potato ricer. Who knew!
