Corny

This is another of my favorite holiday ornaments. It's a little glass corncob, part of a small set of food-themed ornaments that were a gift from our friend Sue in California sometime back in the '90s, I think. I have the date written on the box, but the box is put away and I don't feel like digging it out until it's time to put the tree away.

The corn almost looks good enough to eat.

The star garland came from Crate & Barrel back in the mid-'90s. That store had a huge batch of holiday decorations each year (they still do). I got these and strands of wooden cranberries from their downtown San Francisco location. Before I found the wooden cranberries, I would make popcorn and string it along with real cranberries for the tree; where did I find the time to do that? It wouldn't even occur to me now to string popcorn. And if by some miracle I could find fresh cranberries in central France, I wouldn't waste them on the tree!

  1. I'm loving these images of your ornaments. I also used to string popcorn and cranberries every year, with the addition of ziti (unboiled, unbaked). It made the stringing go faster and made really fun garlands. Like you, I don't know where I found the time to sit and do that and I wouldn't waste cranberries here in Spain!

  2. Stringing popcorn and cranberries.... HOLY COW! We never did that. Far too lazy. :)

  3. Crate and Barrel is one of my favorite stores. I just love Christmas decoration sand the whole ritual of decorating inside and out (not this year though).

  4. I've done the popcorn once- I think I had more time before the internet sucked lots of it away. The ziti and cranberries along with popcorn sounds nice.

  5. Yes, I did the popcorn stringing just once. My kernels were not very large and they just kept breaking. I think I may have ended up with a 6 or 7-foot garland before I gave up the ghost! Never even tried the cranberry variety; when I found the wooden ones I bought 3 strings of them!

Lucky you to have been able to shop at the SF Crate and Barrel store. When we lived in Libertyville, IL I always insisted on a little shopping in the Michigan Ave. store - it was always decorated to the hilt and if I didn't buy something it wasn't because I hadn't found something I wanted!

  6. I haven't even opened the Christmas ornament box in years. I bought one of those trees that has the lights already on it and it looks so good just that way, I don't bother with ornaments. The only thing I add is an angel on the very top. We're not doing a large tree this year.
