Please don't eat them

The daisies, that is. I'm sure I've seen that movie, but I have no memory of it. I know I didn't read the book it's based on. So, naturally, I don't know what the title refers to. Probably something about silly city people trying to live in the country, a popular theme in 1950s and 60s America.*

There's a lone pink rose among the daisies.

This patch of daisies has been here since before we moved in, over seventeen years now. In late fall or early spring, I cut the dead stems down as close to the ground as I can. Then, in spring, they sprout again to flower in the summer. They look great in bloom, like this, but when they start to fade and die they look a little sad. That's the way it goes.

*With the exception of "The Beverly Hillbillies" who reversed the formula when they "loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly. Hills, that is. Swimmin' pools. Movie stars."

  1. Man, were we ever kids in the same era. Ha!

By the way, there was also a TV series (for two seasons, 1965, 66)called Please Don't Eat the Daisies. You might have seen that!

  2. I remember the film -- Doris Day and David Niven -- (and the TV series mentioned by Seine Judeet). Also, the book, which was just a collection of stories. Revolved around a family that move from the city to a suburban/rural grand old money pit with four sons. I wanted a sheepdog from the day I saw that film.

    1. And, I did too, Mitchell! And that actually happened for me! Her name was Milly, short for Matilda and that sheepdog is about the only thing I remember about that film!

  5. The last sentence of the penultimate paragraph made me think of Walter Cronkrite!

  6. Daisies do look great when they are blooming, but when they start to fade, they do look sad. And you are right, "that's the way it goes"

mitch & mary, I have vague memory of the (old English) sheepdog. I've had 4 sheepdogs (collies & shelties) in my life.

bettyann, there was a book called, "The Good Old Days... They Were Terrible!" I think we have a copy somewhere around here...
