Sultry

The weather is all the news in France right now. It's hot and humid over most of the country and today is expected to be the hottest. Yesterday's high on our sheltered outdoor thermometer was 33.7ºC (about 93ºF), but it's much hotter in the sun and on the deck. This morning our low is about 24ºC (about 75ºF). And the weather people say that all-time record highs will be broken today.

Wednesday morning at around 06h30 in the vineyard. It's much more hazy out there this morning.

Days when we can wear shorts and a tee-shirt on our morning walks with the dog are rare, maybe a few days a year. We're having them now. The air is hazy, and although the relative humidity drops in the heat of the day, it's around 90% over night and in the morning. By the way, this humidity is nothing compared to the very hot and humid places in the USA, like on the east coast and across the south. In France, humidity usually comes with cooler weather. They're not used to it when it's hot. Still, I know one Frenchman who is enjoying it.

  1. Let's be clear, I sure do enjoy warm, even hot, dry weather as I had for many years in the desert of Southern California, but I DO NOT enjoy the hot, extremely humid (98%) wheather I had to cope with when working in Washington, D.C.

So far, here in Paris, it has been O.K. At my age, I just can stay indoors and wait for cooler temperatures.

  4. Shorts and T-shirt weather are common here on the coast, but we rarely experience extreme heat. 28 here today that supposedly feels like 30, but the humidity is unpleasant (at only 54 percent) and the air quality doesn't seem to be very good. I'm about to have a siesta in the air-conditioning. And you're right, this is nothing like what we experienced on the east coast of the USA.

  5. I'm intrigued by the Photo of the Week. Do you know what plant is forming the arc?

  6. I've been monitoring temps in a few places via the Net, and you're right, the humidity is nothing like that in the US. A news story said schools were closed, which seems smart, but isn't school out yet for the summer?

  7. chm, humidity like that saps the life out of me. DC was very bad for that.

evelyn, judy, that's a good idea. We plan to give the dog a bath while it's hot (easy drying), so that will help.

mitch, I'm looking forward to getting back down to the 20s!

sheila, sorry, I have no idea! :(

emm, the last day of school is July 5 this year, so they still have a week to go.
