Dead heads

I didn't water the artichokes much this summer. Now they stand like otherworldly sentinels along the garden path. I don't think they're really dead. Maybe they're un-dead. The roots are probably fine and, when (if?) it starts raining again, green shoots will sprout anew.

Pretty in their own way.

Meanwhile, our drought deepens. Ken was looking through photos of the back yard and vegetable garden from ten/fifteen years or so ago yesterday. It's amazing how green and lush everything looked back then and how productive the vegetable garden was. It's like comparing the Amazon rain forest to an abandoned Death Valley parking lot.

  1. Wouldn’t it be nice if the drought ended and places returned to abundance. Meanwhile, I remember some books on winter gardens where everything looks dead and makes for interesting shapes and silhouettes. Pruning was involved.

  2. Ohhhh, I've been wondering about your vegetable garden... not many photos this year. I wondered if maybe you were prohibited from watering, even?

  5. Bad summer for gardens and gardeners. Very sad. I noticed at least the news agencies (in USA) are stating categorically when reporting on fires, floods and drought that these are due to climate change. At last they are not "pussyfooting" around it but I still have neighbors/friends that deny humans are responsible. Our planet needs us to do something about it or we won't have a place to inhabit. You have always in the past shared pictures of the progress of your garden; I didn't ask about it because of the drought.

  6. mitch, I have a lot of material for dried flower arrangements...

    travel, let's hope!

judy, yeah. There's not much to take pictures of this year. I haven't heard of specific restrictions for us concerning vegetable gardens. Often they're exempt from restrictions because they provide food. We never water the grass and we don't wash the cars much.

michael, somehow I knew you were going to say that! ;)

bettyann, not much to report this year. :(

mary, the news people here do that, too, and they've been doing it for a long time. There's not much denial around that I've noticed. France has banned oil-fired heating (new installations), for example.
