Technical difficulties

I took some photos on my morning walk on Wednesday. This morning, when I attempted to move them from the SD card in the camera to the computer, my computer would not read or even find the SD card. The computer reads other cards just fine. No computer in the house will read the affected SD card. The camera will not read it, either, nor will it format the card. It seems to have just died.

Please stand by.

This is the first time I've had a card that just became unreadable. I have no idea what happened, but I do know that those photos are gone. So today you get a shot from last year.

  1. You now have a nice, centrally-heated house...
it will be much less humid indoors....
you weren't wearing anything in man-made fibre when you handled the card, were you??
My thoughts centre on a burst of static... you have my sympathy!

    1. Ken, yes, I know you have.... but you haven't had it on all the time before.
It really does make a difference to the humidity.
I have to try and keep our humidity at around the 50% mark or more because of all the real wood furniture.... it means a lot of cooking with the lids off in winter!

  3. It doesn't have a little slider for 'lock'/'unlock' does it? We had one that used get accidentally locked and then wouldn't read. We also had one which started coming apart which caused it not to read. Pressing it firmly together before putting in the machine sorted it, but we chucked it after that.

  4. Oh, another weird one I've just thought of. My father's computer wouldn't recognise my card if it was put into the computer, but would read it direct from the camera. Do you have a cable you can link camera and computer with?

    1. susan, yes, I have a cable. Problem is that the camera also says the card is not readable, so there are no images to transfer. I think it's just dead.

  5. I've heard good things about this recovery tool, Walt: https://www.piriform.com/recuva Have you heard of it before? Or have you tried any other recovery programs? This one seems to be even more powerful: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec If you haven't yet, give them a try. You may be lucky - fingers crossed!

    1. elgee, yes, and I've used Recuva in the past. But this time the computer won't even recognize that there is a card in the slot, so the recovery programs have nothing to work on. :(

  6. It's a good job you upload your photos every day and have only lost one day. A lesson to us all.
I had no idea this kind of thing could happen.
