Moncontour

We did visit this château/winery, not on this trip, but after we moved to France. The vineyards stretch out to the north and east. Our rental home was adjacent to the Moncontour vines.

The château de Moncontour sits on the heights above the Loire River in Vouvray. Digitized color slide, Fall 2000.

A bit of bad luck hit us last evening. Our seven year old refrigerator stopped working. Yikes! It looks and sounds like it's working (the lights, the fan, etc.) but it's not cold any more. We moved all the frozen foods to the stand-alone freezer downstairs (and some just got tossed) and we're trying to keep the fridge food cool with ice blocks and a camping cooler. Ken will call our local appliance guy this morning to see if he can repair it, otherwise we're going to need a new one. Double yikes!

  1. I think I remember when you bought the 'fridge. Seven years for a 'fridge is not good at all. Ours is now 17 years old and while it works, I am sure new models are more economical to run and generally better. Old age apathy/laziness has set in and we haven't replaced it.

  2. Your photos and sights are always exactly what I expect of France. So beautiful.

Sad about the fridge. I hope it’s fixable and will last longer. I know they’re not supposed to last forever, but 7 years in this day and age seems a short life. And what a huge pain.

  3. I feel your pain. Right now in fact. Yesterday Dennis replaced the fan in our 4yr-old fridge for the second time. With the high humidity here, the fan that moves the cold air from the freezer compartment to the fridge compartment tends to ice up. The freezer stays cold, but the fridge gets warm. Fingers crossed that his repair worked - the temp is down to 50F now, so moving in the right direction. Hope you have a working fridge again soon.

  4. Very sad news about your refrigerator. I am using the GE Profile we bought for our new home in 1996 (25+ years and no trouble whatsoever). I will eliminate Samsung from any list of replacement appliances I might need in the future.

  5. andrew, you're right. Seven years is too soon. The guy's coming today to see if it's fixable. We've already picked out a new model (different manufacturer) that can be delivered on Tuesday.

mitch, it is a pain. Kind of like camping. But we can handle it. There are worse things.

    wilma, good luck!

mary, ours is not a Samsung. We used to have one, but the current broken fridge is a Beko. The woman at the appliance store told Ken yesterday that that's a low-end brand. We didn't buy it from them.
