Bad night

I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night. It's just too hot. And it's supposed to get hotter. One weather site is predicting 34ºC (over 93ºF) for Monday and Tuesday. Météo France, the French national weather service, is predicting 35ºC today and 37ºC on Tuesday (that's 95ºF and 98.6ºF, respectively). Yikes!

A patch of wild carrot flowers.

After that, things are supposed to cool down significantly. But we're in for a few more very uncomfortable nights. Meanwhile, we're cooking on the grill as much as we can. The zucchini is still coming in. I'm planning to make boulettes de courgettes (deep-fried zucchini balls) as part of lunch today, but they get done on the stove.

    1. Ah! I went to the link and see that it was for your own 2010 boulettes de courgettes... they do look great. I never ever ever deep fry things at home... I have never done it. What are your thoughts on sauté-ing these, or baking them?

  2. Can't imagine turning on any heat in your kitchen on days like this! Our highs aren't supposed to be anywhere near yours and I still need AC to sleep. I think we're expecting around 30 tops this week.

    1. It's so hot here that turning the stove/oven on or not makes no difference. Only if we had AC would it matter. As it is, we just have all the windows open until about noon, and then we start closing windows, shutters, and curtains to block out the sun.

  3. I remember as a child sleeping downstairs on very hot nights, because it was noticeably cooler there in all that New England heat and humidity. Is that a possibility for you?

  4. judy, I'm sure they could be sautéed or baked. There isn't any egg in them, so they might not hold together in a sautée pan. But why not add an egg?

mitch, as Ken says, it doesn't really make much difference. It's still hot. And we only cook in the morning, to make lunch. No cooking in the evening, when it's hottest.

emm, yes, but it's complicated. I like my own bed too much. ;)

  5. My solution for the heat, at night. I take a small towel and dunk it cold water (well, considering the cold tap is running fairly warm these days, as cold as I can get it). Wring it. Wipe myself with it and let myself air dry. When I lie down, I put the towel on top of me. That cools me off. After I while, I drop the towel to the floor (handy garbage bag already in place to protect the floor) and go to sleep while the air dries me off.
I also heard someone recommend drying the laundry over one's bed overnight. The evaporation helps cool things down. I assume the laundry is well wrung, not dripping wet. I can't really imagine hanging lines over my bed for this, but if the heat keeps up, I don't rule it out.
Another thing we've tried, but it doesn't really last, is hosing down the house. You can immediately feel the air getting cooler as the heat is drawn out.
