Frosty hamlet

A view of our little hamlet on a frosty morning. It was a very light frost, but it was frosty nonetheless. I think the photo looks better in black and white.

Looking northeast over the vineyards. Click on the photo to make it bigger; it looks better bigger!

On Saturday, Ken installed what's called a solid state drive in my computer. He cloned the existing hard drive (the "C" or "boot" drive) where the operating system and all the programs are stored and copied it all to the new SSD (solid state drive). The old hard drive will now become an external storage device. The advantages of an SSD are that accessing programs and data is much faster than with a drive that spins and that there are no moving parts to break down.

The installation also gave me an opportunity to vacuum the dust out of the computer's innards. I have definitely noticed the speed increase. Now if only we could get a fiber optic connection to speed up the internet!

  1. We have a fiber optic connection and are so spoiled that we still complain about speed. That photo is somehow chilling (no pun intended). A gorgeous spring day here today. People are actually in the water!

  2. It's good to have an in-house IT department. I certainly appreciate mine.

  3. I guess I will look for a SSD in my next computer - I will need to replace mine next year as Microsoft keeps reminding me they will stop their support for Windows 7 mid-January. Any comments from the rest of you about your software? I had initially purchased the "10" but decided I didn't like it and with more discussion with others I felt I had made a good decision 3 years ago.

Did you have to show us that gorgeous photo of macarons? I bought a large box of macarons and I have been trying all morning to keep out of it and then I go and see your photo... well you know what happened then!

    1. Mary, as you've already got a copy of Windows 10, I'd install it rightaway and start using it. I installed it early on and never looked back. As MS will definitely stop their support for W7, I really think you should move away from it now. W10 isn't bad IMO - it takes a litlle bit of getting used to, but there are loads of forums where you can get help, if needed.

    2. I returned the Windows 10 (Costco) but it is good to have your recommendation, Elgee! Merci!

  5. That was how we specified our last new desktop. It works much faster, especially starting up.

  6. I got all excited a while back when I heard about installing a solid-state drive, but then I looked into it, and apparently my MacBook already has one. So I don't get to be one of the cook kids.

  7. mitch, I can't really complain, our DSL connection is fast enough. But I want things to go faster, like in Star Trek!

chris, yeah, those tech guys never met an upgrade they didn't like!

mary, fortunately, that photo was taken in Paris. The temptation is far away!

    michael, very!

andrew, my startup was very slow and now it's very quick.

emm, you were an early adopter. That's cool!
