Hot and dry

The news out of the western US is horrifying. We're fortunate not to be there, but I remember back in 1991 when the Oakland hills fire burned right across the bay from where we were living. The image of the scorched pages of books floating down from the sky will stay with me forever.

A little bit of greenery.

The forecasters are predicting our hot and dry conditions to continue. Monday's high is expected to reach 35ºC (95ºF) here. Very strange for mid-September. I haven't heard of any fires burning in the south of France so far this year. I think they've been getting unusual rain for the season, a good thing.

  1. I was living in Sacramento in 1991 and I remember those fires. Terrible.
What are those pretty, bright red berries in your photo?

  2. It warmed up a bit again today (although it hasn't gotten cool really). Great beach day; I'm in the house. It looks like a big chance of rain late next week. I'm so excited!

  3. Though I have no plans for an upcoming visit to France, I was thinking, yesterday, about what would be the optimum time to visit, if one weren't restricted to summers only, as teachers are... and, I thought, October? No, it seemed to rain lots in October, and get dark early. But, summer was SO SO SO hot the last time, even in early June.... so, I thought, mid September. Ken had just said, yesterday, that it's a beautiful time of year, for weather. Ha! Now, 95°F is expected next week!

  4. Yes, it's weird and scary here (south of San Francisco).

  5. That red in your photo is really striking! Red can add a lot to artwork, according to a watercolor teacher I had. He had a series of photos of famous and not-so-famous examples. I try to keep that in mind whenever I do my craft projects.

My visits to France have been in April, June (2x), September(3x) and December. Mid-September - on seems like the best choice for my future visits. Good choice, Judith! My daughter was in Avignon for her junior year-abroad and it was fun to see all the Santon Fairs/Christmas Markets/city lights/ and decorations. It was snowing when I arrived in Avignon at 9 pm Dec 11 and very cold. After that, bright blue skies and even though the sun was out, it was still cold for the 30 days I got to spend with her! So, I wouldn't pass up a trip for just about any time except July/August when it is miserably hot and such a large group of french tourists are on vacation!

  6. bettyann, I don't know what they are. Hmmm...

mitch, rain would be nice. We need some, too.

judy, I think September is a good time. October can be nice, but it can be bad, too. The first week of November is nice down south. May can be nice, but there are a lot of holiday weekends in May.

    chris, I'll bet.

mary, one thing about high summer is that the prices are often very high. The "shoulder" seasons are more economical for travel, I think.

No end in sight to our heat either
