This is a hard one to write. We think Bert, our cat, has left us. He went outside on Saturday afternoon, but didn't return. We talked to the neighbors, but no one had seen him. He just disappeared. We thought that this might happen one day, but now that it has, we're dumbstruck.
Bert was almost seventeen years old. He came to live with us in 2010, when he was just four. We had some bumpy times at the beginning, especially with our dog, Callie, who didn't get along with him. Since Callie died in 2017, and Tasha came to live with us, Bert has had it good. He and Tasha became best buds and Bert enjoyed sleeping on the couch or on the bed, sometimes nuzzled up with the dog.
I find myself looking out the window, expecting to see Bert trotting up the garden path toward home as he usually did. But he doesn't come. The hardest part is not knowing what happened. We miss him.
It's horrible when a cat goes missing. I still remember how awful it was when Daisy was stolen by the neighbour not long after we just got her. We couldn't settle until we got her back. Let's hope Bertie turns up soon.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed. Our youngest cat Toot disappeared 10 days ago and we thought the worst, and it's so hard when you're at home and keep looking for them in the usual places.
ReplyDeleteTwo days ago a neighbour reported she had been spotted in the secure carpark of a nearby apartment block. We tried to lure her with food but she was skittish and impossible to catch, so had to resort to leaving food. This morning she finally found her way out and nonchalantly strolled in after 7am this morning.
mike, I'm glad you found her. Not knowing what happened is difficult.
DeleteSo sorry to read this. That's a lot of years together.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry, Walt. I remember what a rascal he was at the beginning lol and then how well he fit it and loved the life you gave him. The first days of missing are horrible. Bon courage.
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope he just wanders right back into the yard some day soon. Wouldn't that be great? I think we have all been so heartened to learn how Tasha accepted Bert, and allowed him to be her good buddy :) Fingers crossed, but I do feel for you and Ken!
ReplyDeleteI’m so sorry Bert is gone. The loss of a pet is heartbreaking.

This happened to me and my husband. We had a male cat who was over 20 years old. He just disappeared one day, never to return. Although he didn't seem to be sick, but maybe he was and found a place to die.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss. I know it is hard.

I am forever the optimist so I am guarding that thought. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDelete*hug* I hold onto hope he walks through the door one day soon.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you all and hoping for the best. - Chrissoup
ReplyDeleteOh, what a worrying state of affairs. Many of us know exactly how it feels, but each time something like this happens is like no other - so individual. I'm only seeing this post nearly a full day after you posted it, earnestly hoping that he's now re-appeared as though nothing special had happened (as they so often do). Dreading to hear that it's not so, but knowing you'll post whatever news there is when there is some. Our collective thoughts surround you.
ReplyDeleteI too miss him. He seemed to like me. He sure was a sweet cat.
DeleteHi Walt. I am so sorry that Bert has gone missing and may simply be gone. He had a good life with you.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this - always enjoyed posts of the pets. Sending you both good vibes.
ReplyDeleteIt is Sunday night. Travel Penguin told me of Berts' plight. There is no sorrow like the loss of a pet. :-(
