One last look

New Year's Day is my day for putting the holiday decorations away. The tree comes down, the baubles are packed away, and the lights go dark. I've done it this way for many years. I know that some people like to keep their trees and decorations up into February, but I like the idea of packing things away as the new year starts. Here's one last look at this year's tree, just before I took it down.

And there's a wintry scene on the travel channel, just by chance.

We're having foggy weather now, the result of the normal winter high pressure systems that create temperature inversions. The fog is still, not like the wind-driven fog we remember from San Francisco.

  2. We used to do it around the 3rd. Now, if we decorate, we wait until Three Kings Day to put it all away.

  3. I would normally de-decorate on NYD as well, but due to postponed holiday plans with friends, I agreed to leave ours up until this weekend so we could have a belated Christmas celebration and gift swap on Friday with all the decorations and lights.

    It’s killing me. :-)

  4. That's a really nice tree (nicely decorated, too, but, I mean, the tree itself). Good start to the new year!

  6. NYD was always good until Epiphany and then that was even better! The mornings are cold and dark and turning on the Christmas tree lights just always made me smile! No trees for me for several years now. Too difficult for the cat and I didn't want to ruin any glass ornaments! That was a beautifully shaped tree. I like having branches spaced so the ornaments hang and can be enjoyed.

  7. I wonder if there's a fashion or cultural difference in Christmas trees, like there is in so many other things? I'm asking because the ones over here, whether natural or artificial, are usually quite dense, with no or little space between the branches. Also, our (the Dutch) Christmas trees, are still mostly lit with white lights and have one major colour ornaments - or e.g. bi-colour with some touches of red, blue, quite subdued.

BTW, Walt, thanks for your explanation the other day about the 'tater tots. I don't know that Christmas song, but will look it up now.

  8. My tree is artificial, with lights built in, because real trees are nervous-making in a warm climate. I generally leave it up until Epiphany, and this year I think I'll leave it up indefinitely, sans decorations. Just because. As the song from "Mame" says, "we need a little Christmas now."

mitch, that seems to be a popular date.

    sean, ha!

judy, Ikea makes nice trees. lol!

michael, thanks, and same to you!

mary, I was attracted to the spacing of the branches for ornaments. It's been a good tree for 8 years now.

elgee, it's a classic song in the US, made famous by Nat King Cole in the mid-1940s, also recorded by many other artists over the years.

emm, this one's artificial, too. ;)
